Project & Brief

The Carlton North Residence was an existing Edwardian Style terrace house built in approximately 1906. The brief included maintaining the original ornate street-facing living room and the adjacent bedroom. The remainder was to be demolished and rebuilt in a style sympathetic to, but not necessarily replicating, the remaining structure.

Design Solution

A 6 metre high, two-storey stair hall became the new central core of the entire dwelling. It looks out to a small side garden doubling as a visual focal point and a large source of natural light. From here one can go upstairs to the mezzanine level study which overlooks this hall or continue up to the private master suite. Alternatively, one can continue into the family area through a deliberately small corridor which increases the sense of space as one passes from one larger room into the other. This area contains the open plan kitchen, dining and lounge which look out to the rear yard through large sliding glass doors.
