Project & Brief

Richard Wilson's role for the Essendon Residence was as Project Architect for Ridolfi Design. This was a new two-storey residence located within a heritage overlay. Its original design was rejected by council on both heritage and massing concerns.

Process

His involvement began with the complete redesign of the exterior as well as major reconfiguration of the floor plans to correspond with the new forms. This new design was enthusiastically accepted by council's heritage consultant, and several dispensations were approved to allow the design to move forward.

Throughout design, documentation, and even construction, he worked closely together with the Clients on their common goal of achieving the feel of an authentic Edwardian home - through building massing, appropriate decoration, finishes, and internal layout rather than relying on the use of token features. This required a deeper understanding of the character of this style on both their parts to avoid creating a house that was period in name only.
