Project & Brief

The Mercer Island Residence was an existing two-storey weatherboard residence outside of Seattle, Washington, on the shore of a large lake. The structure was originally a warehouse for a pier that once operated adjacent to the site, but it had long ago been converted into a residence. The brief was now to expand the house, reorganise the interior, and allow for entertaining large groups.

Design Solution

The existing house already had an adequate living room with a perfect view of the lake, but the main entrance opened directly into this room. The entry was relocated and the room was extended to one side for a new kitchen and breakfast area which would also enjoy the same views. To allow more seating whilst entertaining, the kitchen included both a large peninsula and a very large island with a furniture grade finish on the timber.

The remainder of the house was reconfigured and bedrooms were added to the first floor. The master suite was located facing the lake with its own private deck, and the other bedrooms each included a bay window facing the street. These bays were finished with traditional Arts and Crafts detailing along with other matching features on the façades.
