The Strathmore Residence 2 is a renovation and extension to an existing one storey brick bungalow located in Strathmore, Victoria. The brief included saving as much of the existing house as possible whilst providing a new modern kitchen, lounge, laundry and master suite. A new first floor was also to be added for three children's bedrooms, a study and a rumpus. Meanwhile, enough of the rear yard needed to be retained to allow for a new swimming pool.
There were several areas of the existing house with intricately constructed trimwork, unique leaded glass, and delicate ceiling decorations. These were the elements that initially drew the owners to the house, and all efforts were directed toward integrating them seamlessly with the new design. With this in mind, the master bedroom was left intact with an added ensuite and walk-in robe. Similarly, the existing lounge was transformed into a formal sitting room with only a few minor adjustments. The dining room now opens up to and steps down into a new combined lounge and kitchen area. This space was lowered to better relate with the lower rear yard and walks out to a large alfresco overlooking the pool area.
Externally, the existing house was already attractive with good proportions and quality materials. Therefore, the new first floor was designed to simply enhance this and blend with the ground floor rather than overwhelm it.
