Richard Wilson's role for the Camberwell Residence was as Project Architect for Ridolfi Design. This was a new single-storey contemporary residence in Camberwell, Victoria, which was to have the feel of a luxurious holiday resort. An expansive outdoor lounging and swimming pool area were to be the focal point throughout. In addition to the typical living and support areas, the brief required a large lounge, a second sitting room, media room, enclosed barbeque area, steam room, and a basement garage with a lift to the main level. The large block fronts a busy main road, however, alternate access was available via a side street that could be accessed through smaller neighbourhood streets.
The main façade and pool area were both orientated to face the longer, quieter street running alongside the property. This allowed the main living and entertainment areas to wrap around the sunny outdoor space on three sides and directly access it through various large sliding doors. This arrangement also solved multiple technical issues, such as how to provide convenient garage access and take advantage of the slope of the land.
Indoors, the extended length of the home created by this layout was utilised to provide practical zoning for various levels of privacy which can sometimes be complicated over a single level. The entry, sitting room, kitchen, dining, laundry and garage were conveniently located together at one end of the property with the adjacent main lounge wrapping around the corner to directly face the pool. Beyond this is the more private master suite. After this is the north-facing barbeque / entertaining area which faces the outdoor area as well as the opposite end of the house. It also sits across the hall from the media room so both can be used together during larger gatherings. Behind this is the most private part of the home where the children's bedrooms are located.
